Donald Edward Farris, 85, passed away on Monday in Lewisville, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 12, 2012 at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.

Don was born in Alma, Arkansas to William and Viola Farris and grew up on a farm. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Pacific on a submarine tender. He served again during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1949 and later earned a PhD in Agricultural Economics at North Carolina State University. He joined the faculty at Texas A&M University in 1963 and worked more than thirty years at TAMU, retiring as Professor Emeritus.

Don was formerly a member of the A&M Church of Christ, and he served the Bryan chapter of Kiwanis International for over 40 years.

Don had a wonderful life. He traveled the world conducting research and his travels took him from Argentina to Tanzania to Japan and almost everywhere in between. He enjoyed working with his students and always served as a colleague and mentor to them. Don was a devoted husband and father, a terrific grandfather, and a faithful servant of the Lord.

He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-five years, Billye Wilhelm Farris.

He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Blake and husband, Larry, of Coppell; son, Glenn Farris of Bryan; and two grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, William Farris, of West Lafayette, Indiana; and a sister, Hilda Knight, of Alma, Arkansas.
