Gladys A. Florence, 86, of Bryan passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2013. In honoring her wishes, a casual graveside service was held on Monday, August 12, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Norwood Cemetery in Hearne, Texas.
Gladys was born November 24, 1926 to Dee and Lillie Belle Utsey and spent her early years in East Texas. She lived in Hearne for 39 years before moving to Bryan in 2005.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. "Jim" Florence; sister, Ruth Berry; brother, Bill Utsey and her parents.
She is best known for her devotion to her special needs son, James Dee. She was very active with Special Olympics throughout the 1980's and 90's and instrumental in bringing the MHMR to the Hearne area. She was a former member of the Green Thumb Garden Club and the Women's Society of Christian Services.
She is survived by sons, James Dee Florence and Danny Florence of Bryan; granddaughters and their spouses, Elizabeth and Nathan Luman of Bryan, Meg and Steven Patton of Tomball and granddaughter, Morgan Florence of Bryan; great-grandchildren, Evan Luman, Ian Luman, Addison Patton and Emily Patton. She is also survived by the mothers of her grandchildren, Caroline Adkins Wallace of Houston and Donna Armstrong Florence of Bryan; numerous nieces and nephews including Becky Florence Copley and her husband, Keith, of Tyler, Texas.
