James Leon Wilson, 87, of Hearne, passed away July 2 in Bryan. The visitation will be on Friday, July 5 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home in Hearne. The funeral service will be held Saturday, July 6 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church Hearne with Pastor Larry Blackman and Bobby Batson officiating. The interment will follow at Madisonville Cemetery.
Wilson was born in Madisonville on March 3, 1926 to Thomas Lynn and Jessie Elizabeth Wilson.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary J. Batson Wilson; three children, Joe and wife, Leslie of Franklin; John and wife, Shelly of Fairfield; Jane Anderson and husband, Larry of Kingwood; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Merritt Marie Kizer.
Wilson was reared in Madisonville where he married his wife on September 16, 1944. Serving in the United States Army from 1944-1946, he participated in the European theatre during World War II. After the war, Wilson resumed his studies at the University of Texas at Austin. He graduated from the School of Pharmacy with highest honors in 1949.
That same year, his family moved to Hearne where he would live the rest of his life. He cofounded Wilson Drug, which he owned for more than 40 years. Also, Wilson was the owner and publisher of The Hearne Democrat for 26 years.
Wilson was very involved with the community. He spent many years on the city council and helped establish the Hearne Public Library. He enjoyed reading, boating, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. Wilson was also a member of First Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice Brazos Valley, 1600 Joseph Drive, Bryan, Texas 77802; or the church of your choice.
The funeral service will be held under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home, Hearne, Texas.
