Born on October 10, 1929, Prasanta Datta passed away of natural causes on September 16, 2013 in Bryan Texas. Prasanta was born in Calcutta, India. After obtaining his B.S. and Master's degrees in Biology at the University of Calcutta, Prasanta traveled to the University of Washington where he obtained his Ph.D. in Botany and met his future wife Tomiko Sato.
He arrived at the University of Michigan's Department of Biological Chemistry in 1968 as an assistant professor where would spend his entire academic career. A consummate biochemist, Prasanta published over fifty academic papers in such journals as Science and Nature over a career that spanned basic enzymology to cancer biology to gene sequencing. He may be best known for describing how enzymes and their products work together to regulate biological pathways in a process he termed Concerted Feedback Inhibition, a name he chose after watching musicians arriving to a concert with their instruments. In addition to research, Prasanta was actively involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching, retiring as professor emeritus in 1998. His retirement was devoted to travel and listening to public radio while also finding time to mentor his two children, Sumana and Milton as they both became university faculty and ran basic research laboratories.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Tomiko Datta.
Survivors include his daughter, Dr. Sumana Datta and her husband, Scott Dawson, of Bryan Texas; and son, Dr. Milton Datta and his wife, Dr. Yvonne Datta, of Minneapolis Minnesota; along with his grandchildren, Kristen and Lauren Datta and Eric Dawson.
Per his wishes he will be cremated and his ashes spread at Hurricane Ridge in Washington, the final resting place of his wife Tomiko Datta.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the University of Michigan Department of Biological Chemistry for the Prasanta Datta Memorial Scholarship, or Hospice Brazos Valley.
