Martha Jane Shrum Mervish, 91, passed away peacefully Monday morning, October 1, 2012 at her home in College Station. Private graveside services for Martha will be held for her family members only.

Martha was born June 9, 1921 in Gilmer, Texas to F. C. and Linnie Moon Shrum. She graduated from Gilmer High School, and served in the Civil Service during World War II helping to build airplanes.

She moved to the Bryan/College Station area during the 1950's and worked as a bookkeeper at K-Mart in College Station for many years until her retirement in 1983. She loved to write poetry and published many of her award winning works in the Reader's Digest.

She loved working around her home and tending to her flower gardens. She was a very strong willed and independent woman.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Alan Mervish and Randall Mervish; and seven brothers and sisters.

She is survived by three grandchildren, Kelly Alonso and her husband Edward of Houston, Keith Mervish of Houston, and Megan Mervish of Texarkana. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Sharon Mervish and husband Frank Moreno of Montgomery, Texas and nieces Bonnie Jones and Nell Backeen (who were like sisters to her) and numerous other nieces and nephews.
