ROCK HILL – Mr. David Edgar Angel, Sr., 86, husband of Peggy Bradley Angel, passed away in his home in Rock Hill on Friday afternoon, August 1, 2014 from natural causes.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church, with Reverends Steve Hogg and Jamie Burdette officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 12:30-1:30 pm at the church.
Born in Macon County, NC, Mr. Angel was the son of the late Dave Harrison and Belle Sorrells Angel. He married Peggy Bradley on March 19, 1949. He served two years in the Merchant Marines before beginning work as a lumber inspector for Taylor Colquitt. He later worked as a sales agent and then staff manager in Rock Hill for Life and Casualty Insurance Co. Mr. Angel started his own agency in Rock Hill for Nationwide Insurance, serving his beloved community for 20 years, before retiring in 1993.
Mr. Angel was a dedicated and ardent supporter of his children, often traveling many miles to attend their numerous sports, church, and civic events. He was a loving and hardworking provider for his wife and family with a home embodied with Christian values. A faithful member of First Baptist Church, he was active in the Doris Gainey Sunday school class. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golf, and was an avid fan of many sports. He loved music, and he formed and played guitar for the Harbor Lights band. They entertained at several civic and social clubs wedding receptions, rest homes, and other occasions.
Mr. Angel truly lived by the quote he had written in the front of his Bible "A life well lived is a life of service." He was a life member of 60 years and held many offices in the Optimist Club. He was a charter member of the Winthrop Eagle Club and a long-time active member of IPTAY. He was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and a member of Chapter 961 of the Experimental Aviation Association. The latter organization recognized him as International Pilot of the Year for having flown 364 members of the Young Eagles program for their first flight in his Cherokee 180. In 1989, as a member of the Civil Air Patrol Squadron, he helped organize the search and rescue unit for Rock Hill. He was also awarded by the South Carolina Superintendent of Education with the "Palmetto Services" volunteer award for exemplary service to youth and families.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, Mr. Angel is survived by his son, David Edgar Angel, Jr. (Jan) of Rock Hill and their children, Jana, Alexandria and Savannah; his son, James Douglas Angel (Lorraine) of Easley, SC and their children, Jimmy Tabb (Deval) and great-grandchildren, Leela and Kavi and Elizabeth Marbut (Jimmy) and great-grandchildren, Bailey and Seth, and 1st Lieutenant Matthew and Bradley Angel; his son, Robert "Jet" Angel (Betty Rose) of Beaufort, SC and their children, Robbie, Hannah and Grayson; his daughter, Shari Angel Newman (Charles) of Spartanburg, SC and their children, Scott Newman and Leigh Blaisdell (Daniel) and great-grandson, Daniel, III. He was preceded in death by his sister, Edna Angel Guffey, formerly of Franklin, NC.
