Barbara J. Smith, nee Hakes, age 89, of Plainfield, IL since 1957, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2018 at her home.
She was born December 14, 1928 in Streator, IL to her loving late parents, Elmore and Henrietta Hakes.
Cherished wife of the late Donald W. Smith, wedded June 8, 1952. Beloved mother of David (Bobbie) Smith of New Mexico and Mark Smith of California. Dearest sister of Clint (Karen) Hakes of Arizona. Aunt of many nephews and nieces.
Barbara graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University and was an active member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She was an active member of the Plainfield United Methodist Church, participating in the Widows group, Lunch Bunch, and Bible Study groups, as well as in knitting prayer shawls and writing cards to sick and elderly church members. Barbara taught Spanish at Plainfield (Central) High School for 25 years until retirement in 1990. She also was active in the Plainfield Retired Teachers, Plainfield Park District, and Red Rover Social groups. Barbara was an active member of the Daughters of American Revolution (DAR), participating in many charity events. She enjoyed life and made sure that those around her did the same.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Plainfield Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
Visitation: Tuesday, June 5th 3:00 to 7:00 PM at Overman-Jones Funeral Home, 15219 Joliet Rd., (Corner of Rts. 30 & 59) Plainfield, IL 60544. Additional Visitation: Wednesday, June 6th 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Plainfield United Methodist Church, 15114 S. Illinois St., Plainfield, IL 60544. Funeral Service to follow at 11:00 AM at Church. Interment will be private at Rutland Cemetery, Rutland, IL.

Very sorry to hear of your mother's passing. She was a good friend/neighbor to my mother (Jean McMillin) for many years. I also enjoyed having her for a teacher, as well as a neighbor. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

My sincere condolences to the family. Mrs. Smith was one of my favorite teachers (PHS Class of '73). Always positive. And every time I would randomly run into her throughout the years she always had a smile and time for a chat.

Dear David, Mark & Family,
We are so sorry to hear of Barb's passing. She was a dear friend of the Watkins family for many years and best friend to my mother, Marjorie. They enjoyed traveling and spending time together in FL during the winter months. She will be missed.
