Donald Hopkins Obituary
Hopkins, Donald George "Hop" Age 82. Passed away peacefully, Sunday November 6, 2011 at his residence. Born in Chicago on September 29, 1929 to the late Frank and Caroline Hopkins. Husband of Marilyn (nee Meyer), whom he met at the Brookfield Zoo in the Monkey House! Father of Diane Loucks, and David Hopkins; grandfather of Lauren, Amy, Collin and Callie Hopkins. A graduate of North Central College, and a du Pont Fellow (MA) at Ohio State University; with additional graduate work at the University of Washington, University of California, University of Illinois and Ripon College. He taught science and math at Ohio (IL) Community High School, Orland Park High School, Carl Sandburg High School, Joliet Township High School and Joliet West High School. Adjunct faculty at Lewis University, University of St. Francis and Joliet Junior College. He served as high school student Activities Director, and was Chairman of the Math and Science Departments. He was very active in student organizations and clubs. A public address sports announcer from 1953 until 1991. He retired on December 7, 2001, after 50 years of teaching. Recipient of numerous awards: State Chairman, Illinois Junior Academy of Science (1961-1963), Merit Award, Illinois State Board of Education (1988); Sigma Xi (National Scientific Research Society) Certificate of Recognition (1988); Joliet/Will County Hall of Pride (1990); Lewis University, De La Salle Medal (1991); Joliet West Teacher Hall of Fame and Athletic Hall of Fame (1991); He also served as "Senior Scientific Advisor" at Argonne National Laboratory (1962 to present). Conducted "Afternoon Science Programs" including the "Hoop and Hop Show" (with David Hooper) for 250 schools in Illinois (1988-1999). Served as Co-Director of "The Med Project" and "The Engineering Experience", summer programs for high school students (1985-1990). He spent his retirement winters in Naples, FL where he enjoyed reading, bird watching, walking, driving, swimming and writing. As it was Hop's wish, Cremation Rites have been accorded. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 1718 Avalon Avenue (at Larkin Ave.) Joliet. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Joliet Area Community Hospice in his name would be appreciated. Visitation at the church from 1:00 p.m. until time of services at 3:00 p.m. Arrangements by: FRED C.
