Charles M. Barnes, 98, Monticello, died at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, at his residence in Monticello.

He was born Jan. 6, 1916 in Monticello to Charles E. and Lyda Pauline (Renwick) Barnes. On May 15, 1942, in South Bend, he married Mary Pauline Jenkins. She died in 1996.
Charles had lived a full and eventful life, always finding something to fill his day up till the very last day. He was a United States Army Veteran serving in WWII and earning a Bronze Star, retiring at the rank of 1st Lt. in 1946. Charles was a former member of the Monticello American Legion Post #81. He had worked for and retired from Bendix Hydraulic Brake Division of St. Joseph, Mich. as their Chief Engineer.
Surviving are his sons, Charles "Chuck" (Lorraine) Barnes, Royal Oak, Mich. and Kent Barnes, Kelseyville, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Pauline (Jenkins) Barnes; sisters, Ruth, Bessie, Florence, and Merdith; and brothers, Keith, Galen, Clifton, and Ervin.
Graveside Services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the I.O.O.F. Riverview Cemetery with the Chaplain of the Monticello Veterans Honor Guard officiating. Full Military Rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Monticello Veterans Honor Guard.
Burial will take place in the I.O.O.F. Riverview Cemetery of rural Monticello.
Memorials may be given to the wishes of the donor. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
