Harold H. Thormahlen, of Norwalk, age 90, died June 17, 2013. He was born on February 22, 1923 in Hamburg, Germany. Hal arrived in the United States of America in 1949, and attended Baruch College in New York City where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration magna cum laude. He completed graduate work at New York University.
Following his graduation, Mobil Oil hired him as a Systems Analyst in their Information Systems Division. Many of his IT projects took him overseas and included long stays with his wife and children in far off and exotic places like Austria, Germany and England. In 1984, he retired from Mobil and devoted his time to things he loved including music, theatre, painting, sailing, windsurfing, gardening, and photography. Volunteering was one of his most rewarding retirement interests. He volunteered for the CATCH Program in Bridgeport, and he gave many hours of his volunteer time to the Norwalk Senior Center. Over the years, Hal served on boards of the American Red Cross, the Unitarian Church in Westport, the Carver Foundation, Roton Point, and the Voluntary Action Center.
His wife Barbara Thormahlen of Norwalk will dearly miss him. This June 22, 2013 will mark 57 years of a loving marriage. He is survived by his two daughters, Karin Jeffery of Trumbull and Tina Thormahlen of Brooklyn, NY, as well as two dearly beloved grandchildren, Andrew and Kelly Jeffery.
On Saturday, July 13, 2013 a memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Church of Westport, 10 Lyons Plain Road, at 11:00 am.
