Robert E. Zwilling, Sr.

Robert E. Zwilling, Sr., age 92, of Norwalk, died peacefully at Norwalk Hospital on Tuesday, February 4. He was the husband of the late Florence “Ruth” Verhulst Zwilling. Robert was born on July 31, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Arthur and Laura Zwilling growing up in Valley Stream, NY. He had his own sailboat and enjoyed sailing in Jamaica Bay. He attended New York and Columbia Universities and was employed as a chemist in NYC.
During WW II, Robert served his country in the U.S. Army Chemical Warfare Service in Africa and Italy. After the war, he went back to school at Hofstra and New York Teachers College. He worked for many years in the Westport Public School System, as a teacher and an administrator. He loved his time with his family and also just liked to be home working with his computer while listening to music or tinkering around in his workshop. He also enjoyed bowling, reading and taking long walks with his dogs and was always stopping to talk to someone along the way.
Survivors include three children; Robert E. Zwilling, Jr. and Carol J. Zwilling of Norwalk and Anne M. Maxson of Trumbull, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 8, 11 AM at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk with Rev. Frank Newsome of the First Congregational Church on the Green officiating. Burial will follow at Willowbrook Cemetery in Westport. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 4-8 PM. Donations to Parkinson's Disease research.
