Emma Lee McKoy
“Mema”
On August 2, 2012, heaven received a new star when Emma Lee McKoy, fondly know as Mema, departed this life for her eternal home. Mrs. McKoy was born April 5, 1924 in Sanford, NC to Adline Douglas and Shellie Judd. She spent her formative years in North Carolina and eventually relocated to Stamford with her former husband, Silas (Bill) McKoy.
Mema was an extraordinary woman from the “old school” who lived her life with integrity and grace. She loved her family, friends and children, especially her own grands. She had that unique ability to make each child feel as if they were her “most” favorite no matter what the others said and it was hers and their little secret.
Mema was a born caregiver. No matter who you were, or where you came from, or how much you were worth, she treated everyone the same and no one ever went hungry when you came to visit. Under her guidance, you learned manners, you learned to respect yourself as well as others and you learned self-reliance. Her mantra was “…always do your best.”
Words cannot express how much she will be missed by her three children, Lester McKoy, James (Susan) McKoy and Ester (Robert) Tinsley, all of Stamford, CT; her three grandchildren, Darrell Grant, Shawn Grant and Don Hunter; three great grandchildren, Virginia Kenneth, Shawn Grant, Jr. and Mia McCauliffe-Grant and two great great grandchildren Eric and Anthony Ginel as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Family and friends may call the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford, CT on Saturday August 11, 2012 from 9am to 10:30 am. A service will be held at the funeral home at 10:30. Burial will follow at Long Ridge Union Cemetery Erskine Rd., Stamford, CT.
