Jonathan Lovejoy passed away on April 5th at his residence in Essex, Connecticut. Jon was born on August 2, 1931 and raised in Norwalk. He was the son of Attorney Frederick F. Lovejoy Jr and Hazel Arnold Lovejoy, grandson of Captain Frederick F. Lovejoy Sr and Minnie Lovejoy.
Jon graduated from Wesleyan University in 1953 and Yale Law School in 1956, becoming a member of the Connecticut bar the same year. In 1961, Jon became a partner at Lovejoy, Cuneo and Curtis. Jon served on the New Canaan Zoning Board of Appeals and as Judge of Probate in the town of Westbrook.
Jon's interests and contributions revolved around the water, boating, and music. Jon served in the Coast Guard Reserve. He was Chairman of the Norwalk Harbor Management Commission and an active member of the Norwalk Seaport Association. Jon received the David S. Dunavan Norwalk Harbor Stewardship Award for his years of dedicated work on behalf of Norwalk and its coastline. Jon also volunteered for Save the Children and the Exchange Club.
He met Jeanne Dugdale, his wife of 50 years, in the New Canaan Community Chorus. Later, Jon and Jeanne were members of the First Congregational Church of Westbrook choir and Jon sang with the Middlesex Hospital Vocal Chords. He also volunteered repairing boats at Mystic Seaport. Jon enjoyed playing the piano, boating on Long Island Sound, and building intricate boat models. He will be remembered for his humility, quick mind, and corny jokes.
Jon is predeceased by his beloved wife Jeanne. He is survived by his daughters, Jocelyn Lovejoy and her husband, Hardy Green; Janine Lovejoy Wilford and her husband, Carl Wilford; and Jilayne Lovejoy and her partner, Aaron Bouplon; and his granddaughters, Nicole Lovejoy Green and Megan Lovejoy Wilford. He is predeceased by his sister Martha Lovejoy Hanford and survived by his brother Frederick Lovejoy.
A celebration of Jon's life will be held at the First Congregational Church of Westbrook, Connecticut on Friday, May 9th at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mystic Seaport or the First Congregational Church of Westbrook.
