Ruth Gardner
Formerly of Norwalk
Ruth Gardner, a beloved mother of 13 children known for her sharp wit and great faith, died August 14, 2012 at her home in Virginia Beach. She was 92 and had been a longtime resident of Norwalk, CT before moving south in her later years.
Born in Wolf Lake, Ill. on May 20, 1920, Ruth was the daughter of Grace and Luther Sielert. She lived in Dupo, Ill. as a child and later taught at Dupo High School. Ruth attended Compton College in California and completed her degree at the University of Illinois, where she majored in mathematics.
She married Larry Gardner and lived in the Chicago area and later in Norwalk, where she raised seven boys, Larry, Joe, Chris, Greg, Peter, Michael, and Steve, and six girls, Pat, Pam, Mary, Valerie, Judy, and Jane.
Ruth and Larry were married for 53 years until his death in 1996. She had 22 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Laurabelle Miller.
Services will be held at the Church of the Holy Family on Friday at 11:00am. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Bayside Chapel tonight from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ruth's name may be made to your local food pantry, or to Food for the Poor at www.foodforthepoor.org.
