Paul Bogardus Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 16, 2014.
Paul Hurley Bogardus, Jr.
Formerly of Wilton and Redding
Paul Hurley Bogardus, Jr., 84, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2014 after a long illness. He and his dear wife Jan relocated to Cape Cod in 2002 after residing for many years in Wilton and Redding, CT.
Hurley was born in New York City on December 19, 1929 and was raised with his sister Anne in Darien, CT by his loving parents Paul Hurley and Elizabeth Bogardus. He was graduated from The Taft School in Watertown, CT in 1948 and went on to graduate from Lehigh University and Yale Law School.
In 1954, Hurley enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as 2nd Lieutenant and became a pilot and later a flight instructor at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola. He served his country on active duty in South Korea in the years following the Korean War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He continued his military service in the Marine Corps Reserves for two decades and was retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
An Attorney by profession, Hurley began his legal career at Cummings & Lockwood in Stamford, CT. Ever passionate about women's rights, family law and domestic relations became the focus of his career.
No matter where he lived, Hurley always made time for civil and community service. During his years in Connecticut he was active on many municipal committees. As a trained emergency medical technician, he served on the Ambulance Corps in Wilton for over a decade. On Cape Cod, he was a devoted and loyal volunteer for HopeHealth, a hospice services provider, and also served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of Dennis Senior Citizens. He especially loved to plan and participate in Memorial Day celebrations throughout his adult life.
Hurley leaves behind his loving wife of 41 years, Janet Parmenter Bogardus; his sister Anne Bogardus Kimball and brother-in-law Richard A. Kimball; three children, Paul Hurley Bogardus, III and his wife Lisa, Thomas Hall Bogardus and his wife Savanna, Mary Eleanor Bogardus Mott and her husband Mark; three step children, Peter N. Ellinwood and his wife Suzanne, Craig W. Ellinwood and his wife Martha and David G. Ellinwood and his former wife, Lisa. Hurley was brother-in-law to Linda P. Goulding and the late Robert E. Goulding and Leland J. and Martha N. Adams. He also leaves 16 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren and many caring and devoted friends and extended family members.
Hurley's love of tennis, skiing, sailing, wood working, and reading brought him great joy. He will be eternally missed by his family and fondly remembered for his wonderful laugh, his kind and supportive nature, his boundless optimism and his clever wit.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the caring staff and nurses at Epoch of Brewster and to the nurses of HopeHealth, who brought peace and comfort to Hurley as his journey to eternal life progressed.
A Memorial Service will be held to celebrate Hurley's splendid life on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 2:30 PM at the Congregational Church of South Dennis. A private service will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery.
The family wishes that any donations in Hurley's name be made to either HopeHealth, 705 Attucks Ln., Hyannis, MA 02601 or the Friends of Dennis Senior Citizens, 1045 Rte. 134, S. Dennis, MA 02660 so that they may continue their missions to enhance quality of life.

Hurley, the proud teacher

Dearest Jan and Family,
Hurley was an amazing teacher and very patient. Day after day he took the time to teach me how to run my Shaklee business. I learned such important life lessons from him. My kids still cherish the time they spent at your house in CT climbing on the rocks.
Many blessings,
Suzie Sunkel

Jan and family. We were so sorry to hear the news about Hurley's death. We know he and you all struggled so with his dementia and more. We have such good memories of his smile, his laugh, his interest in others, his joy for life. I know he will be missed. We hope there is some relief from the sadness, soon, and the joy from his living, takes over. Sending our thoughts and prayers to you. Love, Linda and Gerald Jones
