Mary Ellen Uhrig Offinger
Resident of Wilton
Mary Ellen Uhrig Offinger, age 85, of Wilton passed away on Tuesday March 19, 2013 at her home. Born in Canton, Ohio, Mary was the daughter of the late Herbert and Helen Tuller Uhrig. She was a member of the Wilton Congregational Church where she was an active participant and member of the Women's Fellowship, the choir and was a Sunday School Teacher. She was also a Girl Scout Leader, member of the Park Street Singers, the Cannon Grange, Order of the Eastern Star and was a volunteer at Norwalk Hospital for twenty eight years. Mary and her family moved to Brooklyn when she was two years old.
In 1943 her family relocated to Norwalk. She was a graduate of Norwalk High School Class of 1946. Following graduation, she was employed by the Connecticut National Bank in South Norwalk until 1950 when she married Adrian and moved to Chestnut Hill Road. Mary served as the business manager for Adrian's metallurgical company, BeeHive Heatreating Co. in South Norwalk. In addition, she ran a household, raised three children, assisted with the family farmstand and made a double batch of chocolate chip cookies every week until a few days prior to her death. Up until a few summers ago, Mary sorted and graded every tomato sold on the farmstand. Mary enjoyed needlework, knitting, cooking and gardening, and was the consummate mother not only to her children, but to their friends, her nieces, nephews and grandchildren, and to the many neighbors on Chestnut Hill.
Survivors include her beloved husband of sixty two years, Adrian E. Offinger, her devoted children; Catherine A. Offinger of Falmouth, MA, Donald A. Offinger of Norwalk and Hank Offinger and his wife Maureen of New York City, NY, a sister, Lillian Schoch of Florida, a brother, Herbert Uhrig of Georgia, three grandchildren; Heidi Offinger Lussier and her husband E.J., Ross A. Offinger and his wife Alexis and Caitlin E. Offinger. Mary is also survived by twelve nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Helen Platt of Colorado. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Memorial Service on April 20, 2103 at 2 PM in Wilton Congregational Church, Wilton.
