Virginia Gartside Obituary

ARCADIA - Virginia "Jean" Gartside, 81, of Arcadia died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Arcadia United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Robert Berlie Sr. and Janet Burgel officiating. Burial will be in the Arcadia City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Gartside was born Aug. 3, 1928, at Grand Island to Setha Ray and Mildred (Otto) Powell.

On Jan. 14, 1947, Jean was united in marriage to Ottis Gartside in Kansas.

Survivors of the immediate family include two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Gary Fernau of Arcadia and Bev and Larry Nagorski of Wood River; a son, Bill Gartside and his fiance, Brenda Manchester of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a brother and sister-in-law, Virgil and Janice Powell of Grand Island.

Additional survivors include eight grandchildren and their spouses, Garrod and Laura Fernau of Ansley, Delta and Brian Sears, Jamie and Rich Spencer, and Amber and Vernon Veskerna, all of Arcadia, Shane and Chalee Fernau of Grand Island, Jacki Fernau and finance, Charles Dostol, of Dodge, Jeremy and Jennifer Nagorski of Albuquerque, N.M., and Janet and Mike Brown of Bruning; 10 great-grandchildren, Logan Spencer, Lance, Jestin and Palyn Sears, Macy Veskerna, Garrison and Lauren Fernau, Cole and Kinley Fernau, Alex Brestel and a stepgreat-granddaughter, Marissa Brown.

The family lived in Doniphan until 1946, when they moved to Wood River. Jean graduated from Wood River High School in 1947.

The couple lived on a farm east of Arcadia where they raised their family.

Jean worked as a cook at the Rose Lane Nursing Home in Loup City until 1978. She then purchased Someone Else's Place Cafe in Arcadia on Oct. 1, 1978. On Dec. 31, 1993, she sold the cafe and retired. Jean resided in Arcadia until October of 1997, when she moved to the Hawthorne Manor in Arcadia.

She was an active member of the Arcadia United Methodist Church. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary Post 251; B-Sharp Club, Red Hat Society and Rebekah's Lodge. She enjoyed playing pinochle, and attending church. Jean was a very good cook and baker. Her specialties were pies and rolls. She also quilted and sewed. She was a fan of the Atlanta Braves, and Cornhusker football and volleyball.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant brother, Ronald Dean Powell.

Memorials are suggested to the Arcadia United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary Post 251 or the donor's choice.

Bonnie,Bev,Bill and Families;
You all have my heartfelt sympathy at this sad time. When I think of Jean I always think of cheerleading and "pep-club" uniforms,she had to have loved the red and white Huskies to make as many as she did over the years! I cooked with her at Rose Lane,whatever she cooked it was always great!
