Mungle, Amelia Abbott
Amelia Abbott Mungle, of Ithaca, died Saturday, January 12, 2013. Born in Highland Park, Michigan, she was a daughter of the late John and Regina Abbott and wife of the late Donald S. Mungle who died in 2005. Mrs. Mungle was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard
, enlisting September 29, 1943 serving until October 14, 1944 when she was honorably discharged. She was the first woman who served during World War II
to become a member of Ithaca Post 221 American Legion. Mrs. Mungle retired as a secretary from NYSEG where she had been for many years. She was also a member of the Ithaca Bridge Club, the Women's Secretary Association of Ithaca, the Eastern Star, St. John's Episcopal Church of Ithaca and the Ithaca Country Club. She was an avid walker and golfer. Amelia loved the theater and attended many Broadway shows in NYC and local theater. She loved her family and enjoyed traveling and entertaining. Mrs. Mungle is survived by her sister, Mary Lacouette; Lucille Cointe (who she thought of as a sister); nieces and nephews, Robert Dean of Avon, CT, Carol Davis of Clayton, NY, Carol Penhollow of Clarence Center, NY, Barbara Kellaher of West Springfield, MA, Susan Deeley of Ithaca, and John Rundle of Ithaca; and several great nieces and great nephews. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by her sisters, Catherine Abbott, Victoria Dean, Josephine Rundle and her brother, Edward Abbott. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, April 19 at St. John's Episcopal Church. Inurnment will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ithaca American Legion Post 221, 1231 Danby Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850. The family is being assisted by the Wagner Funeral Home.
