Fleming, Donald Wayne
Donald Wayne Fleming died at the Cayuga Medical Center on April 29, 2013 at the age of 90. Wayne was born to Mary Mann Fleming and William Morris Fleming on October 6, 1922 in Scranton PA. He and his sister, Jeanne, grew up in Scranton where he attended Scranton Country Day School and Scranton High School, graduating in 1940. Wayne then spent a year at Phillips Exeter Academy before entering Cornell University in the fall of 1941. At Cornell, he was president of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and a member of the Freshman Football Team. In 1943, Wayne joined the U.S. Army
serving until 1946. As a member of the 406th Infantry, Ninth Army, he saw combat in Europe in 1944 and 1945 and received a commission as 2nd Lieutenant while there. After the war, he served as a platoon leader and company commander for many years in the active reserves. He returned to Cornell in 1946 and completed his B.A. in Economics in 1948 but always considered himself a member of his original class of 1945. After college, Wayne worked in the forest products manufacturing industry on the eastern shore of Maryland and later in Maine. In 1966, he married Maralyn Winsor Pritchard, a Cornell classmate, and made Ithaca his home. With marriage, Wayne became a devoted stepfather to Maralyn's three teenage children. He took great joy in having a family and especially in sharing his love and knowledge of the outdoors through camping, fishing and hunting. He and Maralyn loved to travel and enjoyed many special trips to places around the world. Avid skiers, they spent more than 20 winters in Taos, New Mexico. He was a lifelong dog owner and loved being out in the woods with his dogs whether bird hunting or just enjoying nature.Wayne served his community as the Deputy Mayor of Cayuga Heights under Ron Anderson, as a member of the zoning board of Cayuga Heights, and as a board member of the SPCA of Tompkins County. He is survived by his devoted wife Maralyn; his step children, Davis W. Pritchard of Marco Island, FL, Douglas G. Pritchard (Barbara) of Burlington, VT, and Katherine Pritchard Funk (Edwin) of Corning, NY; and his grandchildren, Kate Hofstetter, Allison Pritchard, Jessica (Timothy) Funk-Garvin, and Sarah Funk. Also surviving is his sister Jeanne Fleming Kobrock of Bridgton, ME; his beloved nieces, Sandy (Marc) Kobrock of Pagosa Springs, CO, Pam Kobrock of Hope, RI, and nephew Jeff (Cindy) Kobrock of Gardiner, ME and their daughter, Emily. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, John Kobrock, and his great granddaughter, Emma Garvin. Wayne also leaves behind lifelong friends, Natalie and Bob Rooke and Caroline and Ken Taylor and their families. Wayne was very grateful to the staff of the Wound Center at the Cayuga Medical Center for the skilled care they provided to him over the past 10 months. Family and friends are invited to remember Wayne at a luncheon on Saturday, April 11th at 11:30 AM at the Country Club of Ithaca.
