Howard "Howie" R. Odell, 71, of South Main St., Groton died January 13, 2014 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA, after a short illness. Howie was born September 20, 1942 in Yonkers, NY a son of the late Arthur W. and Agnes Babcock Odell. He grew up in the Yonkers area and after graduating high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force
, serving from 1964 to 1968. After being discharged from the service, he moved to the Groton area where he shortly started working for Bell Atlantic, serving as a switching technician until his retirement in 1999 from Verizon. Howie was also well-known throughout the area as a talented bass guitar musician for over 50 years, playing with many well-known bands through the years, such as Brand X & Donna, Big Daddy and the Duquesnes, The J.R. Band, Route 66, Southern Impact, and most recently the Alderhollow Band. He was a loyal member of the Beaver River Fishing Expedition, the Carrington-Fuller Post 800 American Legion in Groton, the CWA Union and was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Howie is survived by the love of his life, Connie Nicely Odell, whom he married in 1969; his daughters, Brenda (Brian) Carlisle of Newfield, Shalee (John) Cooper of Locke and Janeen Orr of Groton; his beloved grandchildren, Kirstyn and Kaitlyn Carlisle and John Jr. and Michael Cooper; his nephews, Tim O'Donnell, Bob Odell, Bruce Odell and Raymond Odell. Part of his amazing legacy is the many friends he has made throughout the years. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Robert; a sister, Agnes; and a nephew, Jimmy O'Donnell. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 21st, 11:00 a.m. at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams St., Groton. Interment will follow in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden. A reception will be held immediately following the services at the American Legion Home, Main St., Groton. Friends may call on Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
