TRUMANSBURG: Louis G. Wheeler, age 85, formerly of Trumansburg, died on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at Seneca Nursing & Rehab Center in Waterloo. Louis was born in Horseheads, NY on March 22, 1927, a son of the late Halsey and Sylvia (Johns) Wheeler. Upon graduation from High School, he served in the US Army during WWII. He was married to Helen Darling on July 11, 1947, and they soon started their family. Louis had a long career as an experimentalist in plant science at Cornell University, and his love of nature followed into his gardening and bird watching. Louis had been an active member of the Arthur Bouton American Legion Post #770 of Trumansburg, and the Trumansburg Senior Citizens. He is survived by his children; Douglas W. (Karen) Wheeler of Trumansburg, Barbara (Charles P.) Teeter of Santa Fe, NM and Deborah ( Harold) Bush of Ovid; grandchildren, Jennifer Foy, Laura Harper, Jason Scofield, Sarah Rustyak, Heather Roybal, Carrie Eastman and Ben Teeter; great grandchildren, Chyna, Coner, Bryce, Maureen, Sebastian and Gavyn; and a sister, Myrtle Lee and his former daughter in law, Rosemarie Saikkonen. Louis was preceded in death by his wife, Helen in 2002, a grandson, Paul Scofield, and by his brothers, Earl, Roy and Robert. A private graveside service with military honors will be held at Grove Cemetery in Trumansburg.
