Paul E. Jones, 94, of Ithaca died January 6, 2013 at Bridges. Paul was born April 19, 1918, to the late James Jones and Edith Bartholomew Jones. He graduated from Ithaca High School in the class of 1938 and was later drafted into the Army during the war where he played baseball for the Army team. Paul worked for Cornell University for 52 years as an experimental machinist for graduate students at the Civil Engineering Department, and worked with several teams on projects involving soil testing, bridge building, and also helped design the sundial which you can see at Cornell. He enjoyed working with the many students from around the world, a few who became life-long friends. After retirement, Paul and wife Mary had the opportunity to enjoy traveling to many foreign countries, sometimes visiting former students. Spain was their favorite country which they visited twice. Paul's hobbies included working with his hands and building and together with his son, Michael, he built the family home. A licensed glider pilot, he enjoyed flying and taking people for a ride. Paul was an avid reader of history, enjoyed watching sports on TV, watching wildlife from his porch or watching his children and grandchildren's activities, dancing, and going to the Elks Lodge with Mary where he was a life-time member. Paul is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary, and children Jacqueline (Nelson) Eddy, Michael Alan and Shirley Garside, Debra Jones, Melissa Chirillo and Frank Rogan, and Marlea (Steve) Newell. Paul is also survived by seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson; several nieces and nephews and many, many friends. A Memorial Service for Paul Jones will be held Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wagner Funeral Home on Geneva St. in Ithaca.
