Ulric Neisser Obituary
Professor Ulric Neisser, 83, of Trumansburg, died Friday, February 17, 2012. Friends may call on Sunday, February 19, 2012 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Bangs Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, splcenter.org or to a local food bank. A complete obituary will appear at a future date.

Dick Neisser was a superb teacher. He was also a caring, generous and accessible man who reached out to his students. I knew him at Brandeis nearly half a century ago and I have never forgotten some of his supportive and encouraging words. He took his teaching responsibilities very seriously and his classes were always lively and engaging, as well as intellectually challenging. He even made Statistics exciting.

I was fortunate enough to have taken courses from Professor Neisser while I was an undergraduate student at Brandeis University (his first teaching position). My favorite memory of him is he said to me as he returned a much marked-up term paper that I'd written. He looked me in the eye and said I had gotten everything all backwards, but that he had to give me an A+ because I'd argued the case so clearly and compellingly. How often does any teacher tell a student such a thing --"you're 180 degrees wrong, but you did a great job"? For me, he was a role model of what a teacher should be, a role model that has been very difficult to live up to.

Professor Neisser was a Great Cognitive Psychologist, a Great Cognitive Scientist. I learned of your greatness back in 1987 at the University of California, Davis when I first took Human Memory. You influenced us all!
