Lawrence Payne Obituary

Payne, Lawrence E.

Ithaca: Lawrence E. Payne, Ph.D., a renowned mathematician, wonderful father and friend, died at Hospicare in Ithaca, NY on Thurs., August 11, 2011, surrounded by his children. He was 87 years old.

Larry was born in 1923 to Robert and Harriet (Lasher) Payne in a rural farming community in southern Illinois, one of 5 children. Though his family was poor, he always described his childhood as a happy time - one in which he learned the value of small things. He attended a one-room school house, followed by St. Henry Preparatory Seminary. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering and an MS and PhD in Applied Mathematics from Iowa State, where he met his beloved wife, Ruth.

Larry began his academic career as an Asst. Professor at the Univ. of AZ. From there he joined the faculty at the Univ. of MD. 14 years later, he became Professor of Applied Mathematics at Cornell University, where he worked until his retirement in 1994. An author of 2 books and 300 papers, Larry had an international reputation as an innovative applied mathematician, especially in the area of partial differential equations as applied to civil and mechanical engineering. He was awarded the prestigious Steele prize of the American Mathematical Society in 1972. Larry was invited to lecture and teach around the world, and in 1990 he received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the National University of Ireland. He was respected and well-liked by those in his field, and as one colleague and former student noted, he "never heard an unkind word about Larry's work or about him personally."

Larry was a passionate genealogist, enjoyed a challenging Scrabble game, completed The New York Times crossword puzzle in a flash and in pen, loved the great outdoors, and grew, picked and preserved various fruits, vegetables and berries. He was a loving husband, father and friend who greatly enjoyed his weekly get-togethers with his "Old Codgers" buddies. A devout Catholic, he was an active member of St. Catherine of Siena's parish since 1965.

Larry is predeceased by his dear wife, Ruth (Winterstein) Payne, and their son, John Payne. He will be greatly missed by their surviving children: Fr. Steven Payne, OCD, of Nairobi, Kenya, Marcia McKenzie and her husband, Woody, of Lynchburg, VA, Christopher Payne and his wife, Nicola, of Bloomington, IN, and Michele Koch and her husband, Bill, of Louisville, KY; their four cherished grandchildren (Keenan and Kara McKenzie, Sarah Payne and Natalie Koch); and his brother, Richard Payne of Walhalla, SC.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Steven Payne at St. Catherine of Siena Church on Sun., August 14, at 3 p.m. with a reception to follow. A private burial will take place at the Pleasant Grove Road Cemetery at a later time. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Larry's memory may be made to Hospicare or St. Catherine of Siena Church. Bangs Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Larry was the ideal Ph.D. advisor for me in 1964-65 and a steadfast friend thereafter. Always smiling and of good heart. A positive contributor to the world.

I first knew Professor Payne from his work long time ago at the beginning of my career. His work continues to be a great source of inspiration in my research. I shall not forget meeting him at Cornell in 1994.

I was Larry's last PHD at the University of Maryland in 1965 as he left for Cornell. I always told everyone that I was very lucky to have had Larry select me as one of his PHD students. Larry is featured as one of my four key mentors in Chapter 8 of my forthcoming autobiography " The Crossing of Heaven ", Springer, January, 2012.

Larry was my friend and mentor from the day I arrived at Cornell in October 1980. He was a gentle and great man. I learned so much from him. He visited us last in October 2008. In June 2011 Jan and I purposedly made a trip to Ithaca to see him. We were fortunate to have been able to spend time with him. We miss him a lot.

Our parents went back many years with the old St Catherine's gang and I will always fondly remember them! In more recent years your dad was Mom's go to guy to man the coffee pot at events, they were always dear friends. I imagine they are having a grand reunion in Heaven. Both of your parents and you are in my prayers! Fondly, Marie Cappucci McCrone

I’m sorry I didn’t get to know my Uncle Larry better. I heard about him from my parents and they both spoke highly of him. I remember when he came to my dad’s funeral thinking what a kind and special man he was. My condolences to my cousins and all who new him. I’m sure he will be greatly missed.

It was my great good fortune to get Larry as my thesis advisor just before he let the University of Maryland for Cornell. He gave so generously of his time and great knowledge of mathematics. I know he was very interested in genealogy and it is with great interest that I found that his mathematical ancestors go back to Carl Frederick Gauss, arguably the best mathematician of all time!

Many sympathies to Uncle Larry's family. They will miss a great father/grandfather who was so very proud of them all.I didn't know him very well but he seemed a very kind, gentle man who respected life and others. May God be with you at this time.

Larry Payne was probably the best friend I ever had outside of my family. He was always there when I had a professional problem or issue. It was a great privilege to have been his first student at Cornell. He and Ruth showed me so many kindnesses over the years that I felt like one of the family. Elyse and I will miss him greatly.

I was so fortunate over the years to be able to spend time with Uncle Larry and Aunt Ruth and family and to stay with them in Zurich. They and John are now most sorely missed. They have always been so kind and loving and I can look forward to many happy memories. With much love, Leslie

"Beloved, we are God's children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is."
[I John 3:2]

May the sure and certain hope of the Resurrection unto eternal life strengthen and sustain you in your mourning. I unite my prayers to your own that Dr. Payne may see God "as he is."

I didn't get to spend much time with my Uncle Larry, but I treasure the few memories I have of him. He was such a special person. He will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I was a little in awe of my Uncle Larry. Since our family moved out West I didn't get to spend a lot of time with him. When I was little, I remember visiting him, Aunt Ruth and the family in Boulder. Then when he came to my Dad's funeral a few years ago, I got to know him a little better and he had kept in touch with our family since then. He was such a kind, gentle, and loving man with a great sense of humor. My condolences to my cousins - rejoice in the fact that you had such a wonderful father.
