Alice Lee Obituary

Alice M. Lee, 81, of Ithaca, departed this life and went home to her Lord on Saturday, December 25th, 2010, surrounded by her loving family. Alice was born April 19, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY. Alice became a Certified Nurses Aid in Brooklyn and devoted her life to helping people. She loved to sew; she sewed clothes for her children. She loved to cook and helped anyone who needed help. Alice had a heart of gold; she touched every life that crossed her path, and lifted a hand wherever possible. When things started getting bad for Alice she kept those around her still laughing and smiling. She lifted our spirits when we were down, cursed anyone out who treated others unfairly; she was joy, patience, love, understanding, beauty, and a woman of God. Alice was predeceased by her grandmother, Rebecca Lee; her parents, Charles and Louise Lee; her first husband, Robert Leckey Sr.; her late husband, Clarence "Dusty" Smith; and four children, Robert "Umar" Leckey Jr., Edgar Leckey, Barbara ("Frenchie") Kelly, and Clarence "Hasimba" Smith Jr. She is survived by two daughters, Maize Lynch of VA and Yenee Smith of NY; two daughters- in-law, Shirley "Chi-Chi" Leckey and Jacquelyn Bailor both of NY; a grandson she raised, Jonathan Smith of NY; and three siblings, Clifford, Robert, and Olivia Campbell, all of NY. She was the proud grandmother of 31 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a host of relatives and friends who loved her dearly. A celebration of her life will be held at the Herson Funeral Home on Monday, January 3, at 12:00 noon, Rev. Nathaniel Wright of the Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Friends may call from 11 - 12:00 prior to the service. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. A gathering of friends and family will follow the burial at Calvary Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospicare, 172 E. King Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850.

Dear Grandma:

I know these words are written too late for you to read, but I know the righteous soul can not be heard but surely can see. You were my sunshine, you made me believe. You taught me with love and a strong will I can succeed. You were my sunshine.

You showed how tough it can be to raise a family, especially when they acted in ways that left you unpleased. But you were the first show you believed in them, you were my sunshine.

What I learned from you was love yourself, love God and make your way in this life as best you can: it is not worth making enemies but a blessing to be a true friend. You were my sunshine.

You raised me as much as my own mother( your daughter) and your love & belief in me has made me the man dreamed I could be. And it is all because you were my sunshine.

There is not a Thanksgiving or Easter Sunday that goes by that I can’t remember growing up, standing right by your side. I tell my boys the stories when grandpa’s Jazz music drove you crazy and how you would get on Mom and aunt about being lazy or over rule mom and let me play. You were my sunshine.

The last 13 years I have been away, rebuilding the life we would pray about. I want you to know staying apart was not what I planned, but you did tell me working and raising your family was what life was about. Now I blame my self for not letting you know what my absence from your life these past years was all about.

Please know never did I ever doubt your love for me and I thank God I had you up until the age of 43. That is longer than I had mommy. You are, and will always be my sunshine.

Love

Kerry

It will be the little things
that you will remember,
the quiet moments,
the smiles, the laughter.
And although it may seem
hard right now,
it will be the memories
of these little things
that help to push
away the pain
and bring the smiles
back again.
