Jerry passed away peacefully on November 13, 2013 at the Bridges Cornell Heights, surrounded by his loving family. A lifelong resident of Ithaca, NY he was born on April 1, 1931 in Binghamton, New York and was the son of the late Gerald and Ursula Jones. He cared for his elderly mother at home in Danby for many years. Jerry was an alumnus of Ithaca High School and spent his entire career employed by the Lehigh Valley Railroad as a train engineer. He proudly served in the U.S. Army while stationed in Germany after WW II. Jerry's passion throughout his life was trains. Longtime residents of Ithaca may have been touched by Jerry, as he became well known as the man standing at the end of the caboose who threw candy to the children as the train passed through Stewart Park during the 60's and 70's on its way down the east side of Cayuga Lake. Throughout his life, Jerry was a mainstay at the Lehigh Valley House where he had lifetime friends at this storied Ithaca establishment, enjoying conversation and coffee with them every morning. Jerry also added to the lore of Ithaca while working at Purity Ice Cream as a teen, where along with the owner he created the original Bittersweet ice cream. Jerry is survived by his loving nieces and nephews, Richard Mark Haynor of Surprise, Arizona, Daryl Jay Haynor and Phyllis of Oakton, Virginia, Christopher Haynor of White Plains, New York, Greg Jones and Cheryl of Winchester, Virginia, and Laurel Jones-Purdy and Mark of Winchester, Virginia. He is also survived by grand nieces and nephews, Mark Anthony Haynor of Surprise, Arizona, Nicolas and Kristen Haynor of Oakton, Virginia and Sarah and Cole Purdy of Winchester, Virginia and Sharon Jones-Cruz of Florida. He was predeceased by his brother, James Dallas Jones and sister, Ursula Lu "Sue" Jones Haynor. The family wishes to extend its heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful and caring professionals at the Bridges Cornell Heights for accepting Jerry as extended family and celebrating his blessings.
Friends may call on Saturday, November 16th from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Bangs Funeral Home.
