My mother grew up across the street from the Hammonds and her older brother, Peter Gebhard, was lifelong friends with Dave. When I called Uncle Pete to let him know about Dave, he reminded me of how Dave and Daphne met and I thought the family would like to hear the story:

Pete was in Chicago visiting his uncle who lived two doors from Daphne's uncle. A blind date was arranged and they had a nice time together. On the way back, they were in a car accident where Daphne was hurt so Pete took her to the hospital. He was concerned about her and was relieved to learn that the injuries were minor. Two years later Pete read an article in Cosmopolitan written by Daphne Bell who described her last week in England at the end of WWII. Pete asked his uncle if this was the same Daphne Bell he had met and, yes, it was. The very next day he happened to get a call from his friend Dave who asked: "Do you know any girls in New York?" The answer was Daphne Bell and the rest is history.

Besides the Auburn connection, we knew Dave and Daphne well at Ithaca College and, as Uncle Pete said, we'll miss Dave but know he's in good hands now.

To Dave,Freddie,Bobby, and Becky I extend my sincerest condolences. As you know, I grew up with the Hammonds on Grover St. So many memories of your mother and father. As a doctor, I remember your father making house calls to our home. The memories of your father could fill tomes. He was one of the kindest people I have ever known, and one of the dearest.

Surely heaven is a better place now that your father is there. Love, Robby

Dear Freddie, Dave, Julie and Lissa, thinking of you in this time of loss. Your father/grandfather was such a unique and fun guy (his wife too, so sorry to now hear of her passing too). You are in my thoughts and memories. They are all good ones. I remember playing down by his house on Beech road with Julie when we decided to grab the electic fence, just to see what it would feel like! It was a gripping experience, to be sure! Good thing there was a doctor nearby!
