Burda, Karoly (Charles) Ferdinand
Karoly (Charles) Ferdinand Burda of Ithaca, NY, born October 16, 1918 in Bábpuszta, Hungary, passed away on January 21, 2014, in Reno, NV, at the age of 95. Charles was raised in Hungary and Czechoslovakia, and received a Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy at the Hungarian University of Agricultural Sciences in Mosonmagyaróvár in 1943. After a brief service with the Hungarian Army during World War II, Charles pursued additional studies in Germany. Charles met his future wife Karina in 1946 at the UNRRA University in Munich, Germany, where they both studied Veterinary Medicine. They were married April 18, 1949 in Oberammergau, Germany. They immigrated to the United States in 1950, and moved to Ithaca, NY, in 1951. In Ithaca, they pursued additional studies in veterinary medicine, and both were lifelong employees of Cornell University. Charles worked in the CU Analytical Agronomy Lab and retired in 1981. Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Karina (Dzintars) Burda. Surviving are daughters, Silvia Burda Spencer and Ildiko Burda Kruth; five grandchildren, Nicole Krauss, Heather Makepeace, Tim Kruth, David Kruth, and Karina Kruth; and five great-grandchildren, Lillian Shepardson, Silas Kruth, Owen Kruth, Casper LaRochelle, and Blake Krauss. A memorial reception will be held at the Varna Community Center on April 12 between 2-5PM.
