Ithaca: Maxine P. Dean died peacefully Saturday, January 4, 2014, comforted by the presence of her children. She was born to Ulysses Roscoe and Ada Ethel Price on May 9, 1923 on the family farm outside of Bloomfield, Indiana, their only child. Her father moved the family to Bloomington when she was five, allowing her the opportunity to attend public schools. She later graduated from Indiana University in 1945 where she was active in the Phi Beta Phi sorority. She met her future husband, Robert Dean, in Freshman English class and they were married on July 1, 1945 following her graduation.
Her husband's World War II Air Force enlistment assignment took them to Colorado Springs, CO immediately following their wedding. After the war they moved to Ithaca, NY where the GI bill allowed him to complete his college education at Cornell University. They remained in Ithaca and settled into the community where Maxine committed the early years to raising their four children and spending time with friends and associates in the community. She was a longtime member of PEO.
Maxine prioritized education. She read books for the purpose of information and broadening her life exposure. She was an advocate and avid participant in Cornell Adult University and enrolled all nine grandchildren in the CAU youth summer programs. She was thrilled to be able to continue her personal education through Lifelong Learning classes in downtown Ithaca, attending her last class just two and a half months prior to her death. In the end, she acknowledged with gratitude and thanksgiving the blessings in her life: family, friends and all the educational opportunities and experiences afforded to her over her 90 years.
Maxine is survived by her children, Jeff (Barbara Claas) Dean, Diane (Don) Carpenter, Debra (Alan) Ledet, Doug (Sue) Dean; grandchildren Ryan, Dustin, Kelly, Kasey (Meg), Marissa (Dave), Kendal, Karen, Kali and Jenna; sister-in-law, Betty, nephews Ross, Richard, Robert & Randolph Dean and their families; and longtime Ithaca friends. Preceded in death by her husband Robert (Bob).
A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
