Freeville: Philip C. Woodard, 81, of Bone Plain Road, Freeville, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Cayuga Medical Center. Phil was born January 11, 1932 in Virgil. He was employed in earlier years at International Salt Company in Lansing, was a self-employed farmer in Freeville, had worked at Smith Corona, Brockway, and Ithaca Agway. He then co-owned and operated the Groton Western Auto with his wife, Joyce, from 1978-1999. Phil was mechanical in nature and enjoyed small engine repair. He was an avid tractor collector and raised beef cattle for many years. He was a former member of the Groton Business Association and a member of the Groton Masonic Lodge #486. Phil was a "regular" at the Cortland Country Music Park and enjoyed riding his motorcycle. He is survived by four daughters, Dolores (Tom) Pendell of Freeville, Barbara (Daniel) Hunt of Williamsville, Diana (Tom) Drake of Freeville, and Debbie Fox of Cortland; ten grandchildren, Mark Pendell, Julie Lewis, Heather Paluch, Aimee Williams, Alicia Caswell, Hilary Chandler, Amanda, Danielle, Daniel and Jared Fox; ten great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Peek of Graham, NC; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother, Ruth (Yaples) Marshall; his grandparents, Bert and Jenny Yaples, who raised him; and by his wife of 60 years, Joyce I. Woodard, on February 7, 2012. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 19, 2013, at the Shurtleff Funeral Home with the Rev. Sam Neno officiating. Interment will be in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden. Friends may call at the funeral home, 103 Lincoln Ave., Groton, on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cortland Country Music Park, 1824 Rt. 13, Cortland, NY 13045 or to the Groton Business Association, P.O. Box 182, Groton, NY 13073.
