LaBumbard, Richard, Sr.

Richard Nels LaBumbard, Sr. 85 of 318 VanOstrand Rd. Newfield, NY passed away on January 2, 2013, at Upstate Medical , Syracuse, NY. He was born in Gladstone, MI on January 21, 1927 to the late Nels and Lucy Trenary LaBumbard. He was raised with three brothers and two sisters on a farm in West Winfield, NY which developed his strong work ethic. Richard proudly served in the US Army and was promoted to Sergeant First Class during the Korean Conflict. In 1951 he became an ROTC instructor at Cornell University and was then honorably discharged in 1954. He then worked as a mechanic for several years before joining the United States Postal Service in 1957. Richard later became Fleet Manager in Rochester, NY and retired from the Post Office in 1983. Richard enjoyed fishing and was also an avid Ham Radio Operator for many years. His call letters are WB2VWQ. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Shirley Meeker LaBumbard; his children, Debra (James) DuMond of Ithaca, Richard LaBumbard, Jr. of Ripon, WI, Denise (Donald) Friends of Willseyville; and his grandchildren, Rebecca Strong of Willseyville, Jason DuMond (Sarah) of Brooklyn, NY, Juliette (Nicholas) Light of Buffalo, NY, Richard LaBumbard III (Jamie) of Montello, WI, Victoria (Daniel) Slate of Ripon, WI; as well as ten great-grandchildren. Other survivors include his sister, Lorraine (Lloyd) Bryan, CA; his brother, Raymond LaBumbard (Linda) FL; and brothers-in-law, Lawrence (Sally) Meeker of Newfield, William (Paula) Meeker of Ithaca, and John Meeker of Tully. Richard was also predeceased by his brothers, Gordon and Gerald; and his sister Ruth Pfeifer. The family would to extend our heartfelt thanks to Denise Kaszuba, our life-line in Syracuse. The family also wishes to express appreciation to all of Richard's doctors, nurses and caregivers, especially those at CMC and Upstate Medical. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 from 1-2 PM and a Memorial Service will immediately follow at the Herson Funeral Home, 110 S. Geneva St. Ithaca, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Richard's memory may be made to the Enfield Fire/Rescue, 168 Enfield Main Rd. Ithaca, NY 14850 or to Gadabout, 737 Willow Ave, Ithaca, NY 14850.
