Story, Ruth Miller

Ithaca: Ruth Miller Story, 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at home at Kendal at Ithaca. She was born in 1920 in Dummerston, VT to Dwight and Eleanor Miller. In 1943 she married Robert P. Story, and together they raised six children. Ruth was born and raised on a fifth-generation Vermont family farm. Her character and values—hard work, self sufficiency, integrity, and community service—were shaped by her agrarian background. She held lifelong pride in her Vermont farming roots and her family heritage. Ruth graduated from the University of Vermont in 1942 with a bachelor's degree in business. She was a Delta Delta Delta sorority sister. Ruth worked for General Electric in Schenectady, NY from 1942-1945. She married Robert Story in 1943, shortly before he shipped off to combat duty in Europe. The couple moved to Ithaca in 1952, where Bob completed his PhD in Agricultural Economics at Cornell University. They resided in Ithaca for the remainder of their lives. Ruth's life revolved around her large and busy family. Activities were varied and non-stop, including church choir, multiple sports, scouting, marching band, and supervising three sons who delivered the Ithaca Journal. Still, every evening Ruth gathered her family together for a home-cooked meal. True to their roots, Ruth and Bob were avid gardeners. Any produce that wasn't canned or frozen was given to friends and neighbors or sold at the Ithaca Farmers Market, where Ruth was active in its early years. When the growing season was over, she picked up her quilting, which she enjoyed for many years. She was also active in the Cornell's Ag Ec wives group, a member of the Congregational Church of Ithaca, and worked weekly at the Service League. In 1997, Ruth and Bob moved to Kendal at Ithaca where they found a warm and welcoming community and an opportunity to pursue their many interests and activities. In her later years, Ruth benefited from the loving care and attention of the dedicated staff at Kendal. She is survived by her children, Prescott (Kathleen Thornhill) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Susan Porter (Roy) of Farmington, CT; Robert Jr. (Carol) of Ashland, MA; David (Elizabeth) of Northbrook, IL; Sara Geld (Kenneth) of Sao Paulo, Brazil; Christine Hogan (Patrick) of LaGrange Park, IL; by 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, John Mackiewicz of Colonie, NY; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert; sisters, Eleanor Sherberg and Shirley Mackiewicz; and her brother, Dwight R. Miller, Jr. A gathering to celebrate Ruth's life will be held on June 21st at 3:00 in the Dummerston Congregational Church, Dummerston, VT. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruth's memory may be made to the .
