Robinson, Teresa M.

Teresa M. Robinson, 87, of Clark St., Groton, NY, died unexpectedly at the Cortland Regional Medical Center on April 1, 2014. Born May 4, 1926 in Cortland, NY, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Mary L. Morris Clark. Teresa was a lifelong resident of the area and had graduated from Groton Central School in 1944 and had attended the Nazareth College in Rochester. Leaving college to become a devoted mother and wife, she began her lifelong commitment to Groton and Tompkins County in which she served in numerous organizations and civic duties. She had served as the 1st woman in Tompkins County to become Town Supervisor, a position she earned from starting as their assistant town clerk, book keeper, and town clerk to eventually holding Supervisor position for 23 years, retiring in 2000. She was instrumental in starting the Groton Youth Commission, St. Anthony's Church Bereavement Committee, and the Groton Chapter of Red Cross. She was a member of the Groton, Dryden, Lansing, and Tompkins Co. Historical Societies, the Chairman of the Democratic Party in Groton for 40 years as well as involved with the electoral voting committee and the election board. She was a longtime member of the Groton Business Association, Fort Nightly Club, Friends of Library, Office of the Aging, Human Service Coalition, Gad a bout, Red Cross blood drives, and a communicant of St. Anthony's Church where she was involved in the Ladies Altar Society. She had been employed as well for 34 years at the Groton Public Library, retiring in 1998. She was quick to reach out to others and share her knowledge as well as to lend a helping hand in any capacity. She is survived her children, John (Lee) Robinson of Long Beach, CA, Mark Robinson and Lewis (Kathy Buckley) Robinson, Sharon Rumgay, all of Groton, Marie (Phil) Coultas of Gainesville, FL and Ann Telford of Harrisburg, PA; as well as a sister, Jean Warren of Acton, MA; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Lewis H. Robinson in 1968 and a brother, James Clark. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church in Groton. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, April 4, from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams St., Groton.
