Fred was born August 21, 1923 in Woburn, MA to Cuthbert and Gertrude Greenleaf. He graduated from Woburn High School in 1940 at the age of 16 and attended both the University of Massachusetts and Champlain College. Fred served in the United States Navy in World War II and was active in the Pacific Theater of war. He considered his service a defining part of his life. On June 17, 1950 he married the former Evelyn Catherine Morrison in Plattsburgh. Fred worked for the New York State Electric & Gas Corporation for over 35 years, retiring as the Manager of Plant Accounting in Ithaca, NY. Fred was an avid reader, traveler, and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Fred volunteered for many years at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital. Over his final years he also very much enjoyed the company of, and conversation with, his sisters-in-law, Janice Clermont of Plattsburgh and her family, and Ruthie Greenleaf of Woburn. Fred had a sharp mind and quick wit up until the time of his death. Family was very important to Fred and he and his family celebrated a fun-filled 90th birthday party for him last year. Fred is survived by his four daughters, Anne Greenleaf-Gornbein and her husband Herschel of Albany, NY, Jeanne Tolentino and her husband Ernesto of Pasadena, CA, Nancy Woodard and her husband Ronald of Ithaca, NY, Carol Greenleaf of Albany, NY; and his son, Stephen Greenleaf and his wife Jacqueline DeRosa of Folsom, CA. Fred is also survived by eight loving grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn in 1999 and his son Mark in 2006. A celebration of life service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on May 10th at Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh, NY 12901. A private burial will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Plattsburgh, NY. Memorials may be made to the Samuel F. Vilas Home. His children wish to thank his friends and staff at the Samuel F. Vilas Home for all the loving care they provided Fred over past several years.
