ITHACA - David Joseph, a lifelong Ithaca area resident, passed away Sunday morning at Bridges of Cornell Heights. Born on March 28th, 1922, he was a veteran and saw active service as a tank driver in both World War II (in the Philippines) and in the Korean Conflict. He later worked at National Cash Register Company until his retirement in 1984. Dave was predeceased by his loving wife of 39 years, Arlene Hillick Joseph; as well as his parents, Jennie and Mike Joseph; his sisters, Tilly Marollo and Martha VanEtten; and his brother, Joe Joseph. He was also predeceased by his lifelong friend, John George. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Tim Schmidle; as well as his sister, Sarah VanEtten; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, Bobby. Dave grew up in Myers, New York where he had many fond memories of his days on the lake, skating and swimming. A natural athlete, he played baseball and basketball while in school and continued playing baseball in to the late 1980s. He never stopped exercising, taking a daily walk and riding his exercise bike until he suffered a fractured hip in Sept. 2009. Fiercely independent, Dave was a man who lived life on his own terms and who never pulled his punches. He was a defender of the underdog and vulnerable. While serving in Korea, he was reprimanded several times for sharing army food with the Korean children. He was also an advocate and protector of all animals. For more than 50 years he lived on Cliff St., where he daily fed the birds, chipmunks, squirrels and deer. He was a loving owner of several dogs over the years and rescued many stray cats. Dave's daughter and son-in-law would like to offer their profound thanks to the Bridges at Cornell Heights "family," whose genuine love and support for Dave and them over the past three months have truly been a godsend. During this time, Dave and his family have also been graced by a cadre of loyal friends who provided moral support and other assistance. Particular gratitude and thanks go to Dave and Florianna Blanton, Pam Stansbury, Lori Westmiller, and Tatiana Sahm. Finally, Dave's daughter owes an overwhelming debt and gratitude to her husband, Tim Schmidle. Tim's quiet and unwavering support and caring for Dave was truly remarkable. Dave was very blessed to have Tim as a son-in-law.
Dave's friends and family are invited to a celebration of his life that will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Bridges of Cornell Heights, 407 Wyckoff Ave. For directions or parking questions, contact Bangs Funeral Home at 607-272-1922 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
