Roger Buell

Obituary Condolences

ITHACA - Roger Buell, age 82 of Ithaca, passed away peacefully Thursday evening July 22, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. Roger was born in Ithaca, the son of the late Floyd Rees and Martha Swan Buell.
He attended the Varna and Belle Sherman Elementary Schools, DeWitt Jr. High School and prior to high school graduation, he chose to enlist in the United States Marine Corp. during World War II where he earned the rank of Private First Class. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Ithaca High School and graduated with the Class of 1947. He then attended Ithaca College and earned a BA Degree in Physical Education. Later, he earned his Master's Degree in Education from SUNY Cortland.
His love for education began at Henry St. John Elementary School and later progressed to become a principal in Watkins Glen and later he spent a year as a supervisor for many small one room school houses in Tompkins County. During the consolidation of schools, he became the principal of the Caroline Elementary School when it opened and remained there until his retirement in 1985.
Roger was an avid sports fan and he will always be remembered for encouraging and cheering on former students in many sports events. To say that he and his wife, Dee, loved Ithaca College Bomber football would be an understatement. They traveled to many away games to cheer their team to victory.
Even though Dee and Roger loved to travel the U.S. and spend winters in Sarasota, Florida, they always loved coming home to Ithaca. He gave back to the community by volunteering many copious hours with the Red Cross, Ithaca Youth Bureau Ski Program at Greek Peak, and at Cayuga Medical Center.
Roger's residence on the shores of Cayuga Lake for the last 55 years provided him with many opportunities to enjoy his passion for sailing and sail boat racing. As a 30+ year member of the Ithaca Yacht Club, he was the Commodore in 1976. In later years, the homestead became known as "Camp Cayuga" where family and friends would spend many joyful and fun times.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Dee Buell; a daughter, Betsy (Peter) Kaufman; a son, Brad Buell; four grandchildren, Peter, Jake, Max, and Sarah Kaufman; several nieces and nephews; his family extends beyond his immediate relatives. Roger is predeceased by his siblings, Richard Buell, Robert Buell, Louise Buell Shailer, Virginia Buell Wuori, Otto John Buell, and Bettie Buell Lyon.
Granting Roger's wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cayuga Medical Center Foundation Volunteer Area, 101 Dates Drive, Ithaca, or to Ithaca College Football, 951 Danby Road, Ithaca.
