Nancy Elizabeth Falconer, 82, died December 8,2012 at Oak Hill Manor in Ithaca, NY. Born in Seneca Falls, NY on March 6, 1930, Nancy was the daughter of career Navy Captain Jonathan Paul Falconer and Eloise Brown, and the granddaughter of Dr. C. Anna Brown, MD, one of the first woman doctors in New York State. She grew up traveling with her family, and never lost her love for new places, traveling her whole life. Nancy attended Smith College, and on graduation day married Robert R. Vance, Jr. After having three children, she earned her MSW in 1965 and began a career in Social Work. Nancy came to Ithaca in 1972 and worked at Tompkins County Hospital, but a job offer in Toronto at Children's Aid Society led to over a decade of work there, and a published book "Preparing for Practice". When her father became ill, she returned to Ithaca, and in 1986, she renovated and opened historic 140 College Avenue as The Peregrine House Bed and Breakfast. She "retired" in 1996,serving on the Board of Zoning Appeals for a number of years, and was a member of the South Hill Civic Association. For many years she enjoyed working at the family antique store "The Treasure Chest". Most recently, she retired yet again from GIAC where she worked for the Police Commission Board. As well as being known for her civic mindedness, Nancy was an avid gardener, artist, seamstress, writer, hostess, mentor and friend, but her greatest passion was her family, and her love was returned whole heartedly. We will miss you, Momma. Nancy is survived by her brother, John Paul Rutherford/Jill Falconer of Washburn, Wisconsin, her three children, Michael/Liz Vance, Susan Vance, Holly Vance/Rodney Thomson all of Ithaca, her loving grandchildren Corinne Everhart, Jonathan/Samantha Vance, Dylan/Nora Vance, Tyler/Tyler Thomas, nieces and nephews Jonathan, Leslie, Andy, Peter, Tori, Toni and Ian Falconer, and two greatgrandchildren Miles and Sophia Thomas - with another on the way! A gathering of Nancy's family and friends will meet at the Elks Lodge ( old Coddington Restaurant) on Coddington Rd on Monday, December 17 between 4 - 6 PM. If you would like, please make a donation to Oak Hill Manor in lieu of flowers.
