Janet Kay Fisher died November 9, 2012 at the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Administration Medical Center, Phoenix, Arizona after losing the battle against non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Janet was born January 5, 1947 in Hamden, Missouri. She was the daughter of Albert Edward Long and his wife, Marjorie Alice Wilson. Janet lived in Chandler, Arizona after her family moved from Missouri in the mid 1950's and was graduated from Chandler High School in 1965. She married Gilbert David Fennell in 1966 and they divorced in 1973. She worked several jobs including at the Arizona Republic newspaper before enlisting in the Air Force in 1974 where she trained to be a weather observer. She was assigned to Royal Air Force Station Upper Heyford, England in 1975 following technical training at Chanute AFB, Illinois. While assigned to RAF Upper Heyford, she met and married Gary Robert Fisher who was also assigned there. She was discharged from the Air Force upon return to the States in 1979. In January 1980 she became a full time student in Atmospheric Science at Cornell University and was graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science. After graduation she concentrated on raising their boys and supporting her husband in numerous moves with the Air Force. In 1990 she began work as a weather forecaster for the National Weather Service in Redding, California. Following her husband's retirement from the Air Force in 1992, they returned to the family's Trumansburg, New York farm. After their sons were graduated from high school, she was employed as a climatologist with the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University until retiring in 2008. Shortly before retiring Janet was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that she battled for the remainder of her life. Janet is survived by her husband Gary, sons Brandon Jay Fisher, Phoenix, AZ, and Ryan Mathew Fisher (wife Deborah), Jacksonville, FL; sisters Patsy Nance, Apache Junction, AZ and Carolyn Blake, Murrieta Springs, CA; and mother-in-law Wilma J. Fisher, Trumansburg, NY. Also surviving are 12 nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and nephews. Her father Albert Edward Long, mother Marjorie Alice Gabbert, stepmother Cleo Long, and father-in-law Richard H. Fisher, predeceased her. Interment was in the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona following funeral services November 15, 2012 at the Christ's Church of the Valley, Peoria, AZ and military honors at the cemetery.
