Spencer Wing Obituary
Groton: Spencer W. Wing, 19, of Chipman Corners Road, Groton, NY, died unexpectedly on January 1, 2013. Born February 1, 1993 in Cortland, NY he was the son of Harry Wing III of Port Saint Lucie, FL and Colleen Hamilton of Groton. Spencer had graduated from Groton Central School in 2011 where he had played football, and then became employed at Stonehedge's Golf course, and had been a member of the Groton American Legion and Groton Rod and Gun Club. He had enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his friends. In 2011, he enlisted to serve his country with the US Marine Corp, where he was serving as a Canoneer with Lima Battery, 3rd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment at Twentynine Palms, CA. His untimely death will leave a void in his family, friends and fellow Marine family. He is survived by the his parents, Colleen (Phil) Hamilton of Groton, Harry (Dora) Wing III of Port Saint Lucie, FL; his brother, Brandon Wing of Groton; half brother, Anthony J. Wing of FL; stepsisters, Kelsey Deso and Loralee Deso, both of Rouses Point, NY. Also surviving is his maternal grandfather, William Conner of Groton and his paternal grandfather, Gerald Thompson of Phoenix, NY as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandmothers, Patricia Conner and Ann Wing. Services will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2012, at the Groton Community Church at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Christopher Xenakis officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors will be held in the spring at the Groton Rural Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams St., Groton on Friday, January 4, 2013, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Groton American Legion or the Groton Rod and Gun Club. Spencer was one of those few who looked like they could make it far. Not just on candlelight, but go very far with their career. By this I meant that he had what it took to hold the whole base together. If it was not for his early department, Spencer would have made it big. I wish to give my regards to Spencer's family any anyone else who looked up to him. Spencer was not only an amazing friend or amazing soldier, he was and will be more than that. Semper Fi. Shall we see eachother once again, friend.

Spencer was in my 8th period class in 7th grade life science of the 2005-2006 school year...one of my all-time favorite classes. It was my first year teaching and he was a great addition. Spencer's influence was far reaching and powerful, simply with his quiet presence. He was a great friend of Allison, a role model for Charlie while he was water boy for the football team and Spencer was on the team, and he was always so respectful to me everyday in school. Spencer, I met you nearly 5 years ago on an on-line game. We instantly hit it off and became good friends. We spoke about a lot things, some of it was stupid and juvenile as we were still kids, but some of the stuff we talked about was the Marines. The first time you told me you wanted to join the Marines, I gave you a hard time for it. I made jokes and tried to dissuade you, but you were so firm and determined, I just knew you would achieve any goal you set your sights on. You impressed me with the way you knew what you wanted to do in life whereas I just fooled around, not knowing what do to do. I envied you for your absolute beliefs in your convictions and your tolerance and most of all that curious ability of yours to make anyone feel better simply by talking to you. Spencer you were a good friend and I miss you. I wish I had spoken to you more often as of late, I wish I could have been a better friend to you.
My condolences and respect go to Spencer's family for raising such a good man. You probably will have never heard of me, but nonetheless, I wish you the strength and endurance you will need and hope you take some small comfort in knowing that I, and many, many others that knew Spencer will mourn his loss with you.

I didn't have the opportunity to ever meet Spencer face to face, but I did have the pleasure to know him for three years. Spencer was always caring and just lovely person and I still can not wrap my head around his departure. You will always be remembered and may we meet soon again. Although I did not know the family, I grew up with Spencer and graduated with him. He never failed to put a smile on everyone's face. He was one of the strongest and nicest people I've ever met. I remember telling him how proud I was of him at graduation. I will stand by those words. Rest in Peace, and I'll see you again someday.
