ITHACA: Sally-Ann Merwin died after a long illness in Ithaca, NY at the end of December 2012. She was born and raised in Philadelphia, married Richard E. Merwin in 1944, and spent most of her adult life in the mid Hudson Valley and then Washington DC. An unconventional, strong-willed woman, she read voraciously, lived an intense life of the mind, and wielded a sharp wit to the very end. She raised her four children with a rare mixture of wild abandon and total responsibility. She was passionate about animals, and volunteered for decades as a docent in the primate section of the National Zoo. She lived a very full 87 years - long enough to enjoy having three great-grandchildren - and was able to travel throughout Europe, Egypt, Central Africa, Russia, China, Japan, and Mexico in her later years. Sally-Ann was fortunate to share 37 good years with Richard Merwin until his death in 1981; and then she enjoyed another 30 years of close companionship with another fine man - Dunbar Chambliss. She will be missed greatly and long remembered by those who knew and loved her.
