Senter, E. Shirley

Groton: E. Shirley Senter, 76, of Groton, passed away Friday, November 29, 2013, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse after a courageous battle fighting breast cancer. Shirley was born February 9, 1937 in Verne, Kentucky, a daughter of the late John and Ota (Smith) Mayfield. She resided in Groton for the past 41 years, having relocated with her family from Ohio in 1972. Shirley was a devoted wife and family homemaker, and for several years had operated Senter's Twist in Groton with her husband, George. Shirley was a member of the Post 800 American Legion Auxiliary and an avid golfer and bowler, participating in many leagues at Stonehedges Golf Course and the Corona Club. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, and morning coffee with her friends. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, George R. Senter, Sr.; by her children: George (Pam) Senter, Jr. and their children Alison, Kraig, Valerie, and Stephanie; Kevin (Jocelyn) and children Kevin Jr. (Erin) and Josh Senter; and Kelie Oliver and her children, Zacharia and Angelina Oliver. She is also survived by her sisters, Alma (Edward) Bowman of Niceville, FL and Florence Haller of Xenia, OH, and by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by a brother, Homer Mayfield, and sisters, Bea Julick, Hazel Lay, and Roberta Mayfield. A funeral service for family and friends will be held on Thursday, December 5, at 11:00 a.m. at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 103 Lincoln Ave., Groton. Spring interment will be in Groton Rural Cemetery. The family will also receive friends at the Groton American Legion immediately after the services.
