GUSTAV (GUS) H. KOPP
Gustav (Gus) H. Kopp, 88, passed away quietly at his home in the presence of loved ones on June 24, 2003. His family wishes to thank Dr. Michael Goodfriend and Ithaca Cardiology Associates, Dr. Robert Kaplan and his staff, and also the staff of Hospicare for the wonderful loving care given to him and his family during his lengthy illness. Thanks also to The Lansing Funeral Home, Inc. for their kind and friendly assistance.Gus was born August 5, 1914 in Dolgeville, NY, son of the late Frederick and Marie (Burschkat) Kopp.Gus was married to Gertrude (Trudy) Bowers in Christ Lutheran Church in Little Falls, NY on November 6, 1948. He was a very loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.Gus graduated from the Dolgeville Central High School and received an Associate Degree in Agriculture from the SUNY Agriculture and Technical Institute at Morrisville, NY. He was inducted into the Armed Forces on April 23, 1942, serving as an MP for two and one half years, attending the MP Military Occupational Government School in Fort Custer, Michigan, and the Medical Corps Surgical Technical School in El Paso, TX. He was then sent to Italy to join the 1st Armored Medical Battalion. At wars' end, he served with the occupational forces in Germany, returning to the States January 29, 1946. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sgt. on February 4, 1946.Gus held a couple of positions before going into partnership in a feed store in Kreamer, PA. After dissolving his partnership, he was employed in the Poultry Department of Cornell University, serving for many years as Farm Manager of their Poultry Experimental Station in Horseheads, NY. He retired from Cornell in August of 1976.Besides his wife, Trudy, Gus is survived by a son, Frederick and his wife Linda of Pittsford, NY; and a daughter, Jacquelyn and her husband David of Clarksburg, MD; granddaughters, Kristin Kopp, Katherine, Sarah, Laura and Emily Cromer; and grandson, Erik Kopp; brothers, Alfred and his wife Nellie of Charleston, SC; brother, Walter and his wife Ingeborg of Liverpool, NY; sisters-in-law, Cornelia Kopp of Reading Center, NY, Minnie Bowers of Lansing, NY, Eleanor Hicks of Nesconset, NY; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Arthur of Reading Center; and brother-in-law, Howard Hicks of Nosconset.Gus was a past president and member of The Lansing Lions Club and a current member of The Lansing Senior Citizens. He was also a member of The St. Luke Lutheran Church, 109 Oak Ave., Ithaca, where funeral services will be led by The Rev. Rick Blair, on Saturday, June 28, assisted by Gus' brother, The Rev. Walter R. Kopp, nephew, The Rev. Frederick W. Kopp, with The Remembering by niece, Lois Kopp Daniels. Funeral arrangements are being made by The Lansing Funeral Home, 32 Auburn Rd., Lansing, NY. Calling hours are on Friday, June 27, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Gus will be laid to rest in The Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Ithaca, NY.
