RICHARD MERLE "ANDY" ANNONSON
HARFORD - Richard Merle "Andy" Annonson, 66, of 1165 Daisy Hollw Rd., Harford, died unexpectedly, August 5, 2003 at the Cortland Memorial Hospital. Andy was born on May 2, 1937 in Bemidji, MN to Herbert and Grace Cummings Annonson.Andy attended school in Oak Creek, WI, and joined the Army in 1954 at the age of 17. He was stationed all around the globe, including France, Germany, Korea, Alaska and the continental United States. Andy served two tours of duty as a combat engineer in Vietnam from 1966 to 1969, and was awarded two Bronze Stars for bravery. He received a number of other medals during his career, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, RVN Campaign Medal, RVN Gallantry Cross, Good Conduct Medal and Army Commendation Medal. Andy retired from the Army as an E-6 Staff Sergeant after 23 years of service in December 1977. He began his new career, retiring as a working foreman from the Cortland County Highway Department in October 1999.A true sports fan, Andy avidly followed Syracuse Orangeman basketball and football. He was an outdoorsman who loved animals, hunting and fishing. Andy enjoyed people and was always willing to lend encouragement as well as share advice. His colorful, mid-western flavored speech, keen storytelling ability, and kind heart toward those in need will long be remembered.Andy is survived by many family members and friends, including his loving wife, Claire Harrison Annonson of Harford; sons, Richard Jr (Carrie) Annonson of Milwaukee, WI, David (Jeanne) Cyr of WI, Andrew Annonson of Harford, James Annonson of Dryden; and daughter, Jennifer (Jacob) Sampson of Fort Meade, MD; his mother, Grace Annonson of Pinewood, MN; brother, Harold (Pat) Annonson of Oak Creek, WI; sister, Rose Marie Annonson of Oak Creek; grandchildren, Hope Elizabeth Sampson, Lisa, David, Cyr Jr., Nicole Cyr and Edward Cyr; and several nieces and nephews. Andy was predeceased by his daughter, Kim Marie, in 1990; and his father, Herbert Annonson, in 1985.Services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, August 9, 2003 at the Perkins Funeral Home with Pastor James Owens, of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden. Friends may at the funeral home, 55 West Main St., Dryden, NY on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.Donations in Andy's memory may be made to the Harford Fire Department, Harford, NY 13784, or the Dryden Ambulance Fund, PO Box 397, Dryden, NY 13053-0397, or a charity of ones choice.
