H. LeRoy Ashcraft, 87, of Newton, died Tuesday (April 15, 2014) at the Newton Presbyterian Manor.
He was born on May 26, 1926, in Strong City, the son of Willard L. and Ruth Irene Orr Ashcraft. The family would later move to Newton where LeRoy graduated from Newton High School. LeRoy enlisted in the U.S. Navy
on May 25, 1944, and was discharged on June 24, 1946. He married Clara May Cleaver on Jan. 6, 1948, in Salina. They returned to Newton to reside. Clara died on Feb. 13, 1989.
LeRoy had worked as a yard engineer for the Santa Fe Railroad until retiring. He had also been a member of the Newton Masonic Lodge and the American Legion.
Survivors include his sons, Willard L. Ashcraft II of Newton; daughter, Ruthe M. Ashcraft-Starlin of Omaha, Neb.; brother, Richard Ashcraft of Lawrence; and two grandchildren.
LeRoy is preceded in death by his parents; wife; and his siblings, Glenn Ashcraft, Lt. Col. Claude Reed, Norman Banman and Carol Ashcraft.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday (April 18, 2014) at the Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Restlawn Gardens of Memory near Newton.
Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday 1 p.m. until 8 p.m.
