T.W Tillman Obituary

COLUMBIA – T.W. Tillman, 85, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013. Mr. Tillman was a son of the late Prince Albert Tillman and Ethel Hollis Tillman. He was a veteran of World War II who served in the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1951, Mr. Tillman enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. During his military tenure, he served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He retired from the U.S. Air Force with the rank of technical sergeant in 1970. After his military service, Mr. Tillman began a second career at the University of South Carolina, where after many years of service, he retired as assistant director of operations at the student union in the Russell House. A Master Mason AFM, Mr. Tillman received his 50-year award from Jackson Lodge No. 53 in 2009. He was a longtime member of North Trenholm Baptist Church, where he was an ordained Deacon in 1992. Funeral service for Mr. Tillman will be at 12:30 p.m.Tuesday, Feb. 12, at North Trenholm Baptist Church, 6515 N. Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29206, officiated by the Revs. Joe Copeland, Donald Tillman and Dr. Patti Tillman Simpson. Interment will be at 2 p.m. at Fort Jackson National Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service at 11:30 a.m. Survivors include his wife of more than 54 years, Mrs. Sara Hough Tillman; two daughter, Nancy Tillman Phillips Davidson and her husband, James, of Travelers Rest, and Suzanne Marie Tillman of Columbia; a son, Thomas Nathan Tillman of Columbia; two grandchildren, Andrew Michael Phillips, and Emily Phillips Ballew and her husband, Stephen, of Greenville; a step-granddaughter, Hannah Elizabeth Davidson of Greenville; a great-grandson, Nicholas Colton Ballew; a great-granddaughter, Layla Marie Ballew; and a sister, Lois T. Ghent of Marshall, Texas. He was preceded in death by siblings Truman Tillman, Dozier Tillman, Birdie T. Hudson, P. A. Tillman Jr. and Hollis Tillman.
