MINT HILL, N.C. – Lucy Self Bowers passed away Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at home. She was born Aug. 2, 1923 in Lancaster County, a daughter of the late Ezell Jefferson and Lottie Sims Self. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Waddell Bowers, and son, Roger Bowers, as well as brothers Rubin Self, John Self, Perry Self, Lee Self, Claude Self and Ezell J. Self, Jr. and sisters, Cora Horne, Elizabeth Rollings and Kate Robinson.
Ms. Bowers is survived by four sons; Lawrence Donavan Bowers and Kenneth Melvin Bowers of Liberty Hill, Rubin S. Bowers of Highlands, N.C., and Leamon Douglas Carroll of Stallings, N.C.; six daughters, Sarah Lucille Scott, Ruby Taylor and Patricia Brewer of Charlotte, Eveleen Y. Avant of Harrisburg, N.C., Reba Taylor of Cashiers, N.C. and Arlene B. Gault of Stallings; 18 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service for Ms. Bowers is 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at McEwen Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.
She was a loving mother and grandmother. The family would like to extend their gratitude to her caregivers Jessica Josey, Jordan Kaminer and Hawa Adamu.
