Mr. R. Lewis Surls, Jr., 89, of Lancaster, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Springs Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 20, 1924, in Florence, a son of the late Ruffin Lewis Surls Sr. and Marie Thompson Surls.
Mr. Surls was a member of First Baptist Church. He served our country in the U.S. Navy
during World War II
and fought in the Pacific Theater. After his discharge from the Navy, he coached high school football in Georgia and later entered into the insurance business and was employed with Fred W. Vaughn Insurance.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Surls is 2 p.m. today, March 14, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Lancaster Memorial Park with Military Honors.
Mr. Surls is survived by his wife, Carolyn Vaughn Surls of Lancaster; a son, Ruffin Lewis Surls III and his fiancé, Marylin, of Richburg; a daughter, Cathy S. Balkcum of Lancaster; a sister, Virginia Rush of Lexington; a grandson, William Tyler Surls; and a grandpup, That Dog.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Lina Jolly.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today, March 14, at First Baptist Church.
