Mrs. Ruth Wright Rucker, 97, of Lancaster passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at Springs Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Rucker was born in Abbeville on April 15, 1915. She was a daughter of the late Emma Lomax Lowe. She was reared by her great aunt and uncle, the late Margaret and John Wright. She was married to the late Aaron Riley Rucker. Mrs. Rucker was an active member of Mount Zion AME Zion Church and was educated in the public schools of Abbeville and Atlanta. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta. Mrs. Rucker also attended Morris Brown College in Atlanta. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Allen University in Columbia. She was a devoted wife who worked with her husband to improve the educational system in Lancaster. The community of Lancaster honored them by naming a school, A R Rucker Middle School. She was dearly loved by her family as well as the many students she taught at J.J. Clinton Elementary School in Lancaster. Mrs. Rucker was an active member of Iota Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was blessed with four children. Survivors include a son, Dr. Douglas Aaron Rucker and his wife, Ruby King Rucker; two daughters, Margaret Rucker Sheftall and her husband, Dr. Jackson B. Sheftall Jr., Patricia Rucker Pangburn and her husband, Colonel Kenneth D. Pangburn Jr.; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a brother, Samuel Edward Lowe; two sisters, Mildred Lowe Hollis and Gladys Lowe Jackson; a devoted and beloved sister-in-law, Gladys Rucker Mattison; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Ruth Aaronnette Rucker Allen. A funeral service will be at noon Saturday, Feb. 9, at Mount Zion AME Zion Church, 317 East Barr St., officiated by Dr. Victor Wilson. Burial will follow in Lancaster Memorial Park. Viewing is from 5 to 8 p.m., with family visitation at 7 p.m., today, Feb. 8, at Mount Zion AME Church. King's Funeral Home in Chester is in charge of arrangements.
