HEATH SPRINGS – Robert William Smith, 67, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, from complications of lung cancer at Presbyterian Hospital. He was born July 14, 1945 in Alexandria, Va. , and was a son of the late Robert Weaver Smith and Marie Davis Smith. After attending two years at UVA, he entered the U.S. Marine Corp, where he obtained the rank of captain. He served in Vietnam as a combat pilot flying A6A Intruder planes. In 1970, he received a bachelor of arts degree in business/accounting from Chapman College in Orange, Calif. Later he received a bachelor of science degree in computer science from UNCC, where he also taught computer science. He worked for Sterling Commerce as a computer engineer in technical sales until he retired. Some of his favorite activities included sailing, gourmet cooking, gardening, wood working, and competitive shooting. Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Judy; his son, Greg; his daughter, Jill; his brother-in-law, Dr. John L. Harris, III and his wife, Judy, of Roanoke, Va.; brother-in-law, Frank M. Harris and his wife, Sheila, of Niceville, Fla.; and many loved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Rick Smith. A service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in the chapel of Hartley-Burgess Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at Hartley-Burgess Funeral Home and will also host a gathering afterwards at their home, 773 Coldstream Road, Heath Springs, SC 29058.
