Ernestine Bailey Gold, 95, passed away Monday, March 25, 2013. She was born July 17, 1917, in Heath Springs, the third oldest of seven children. Ernestine was a daughter of Ernest Jackson Bailey and Bessie Lee Floyd. She completed high school in Lancaster and went on to attended Erskine College. In 1937, she became a staff member to Congressman Prilleou Richards of South Carolina. While in Washington, D.C., she met Charles Fortune Gold. They married in 1946 and returned to Rutherfordton, N.C., several years later. Ernestine was active in many local organizations including Rutherford County politics, the Lamar Stringfield music club and the American Legion. She was a member of numerous bridge clubs and was devoted to her friends in the Sunset Beach bridge club. In 1962 after her husband's death, she began working as the secretary of the Rutherfordton Elementary School principal. She remained in that position for over 40 years. Ernestine is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Shaver and her husband, David M., of Swannanoa, N.C. and Patsy Cram and her husband, Robert L., of Indianapolis. Ernestine dearly loved every member of her Bailey and Gold families, all of her "adopted children" and friends. The celebration of life funeral services are 2 p.m. Monday, April 1, at Saint Francis Episcopal Church, 408 N. Main St., Rutherfordton, officiated by the Rev. Chris Fair Beebee, with a gathering for family and friends to follow in the parish house. The family requests no flowers, but memorials in Ernestine's memory may be made to St. Francis Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 46 Rutherfordton, NC 28139.
